Sue Carolywn Egerton Smith passed away February 17, 2022, having lived a long and productive life. She was a devoted and caring daughter, spouse, mother, grandmother and friend whose love for her family, dedication to hard work and enjoyment of life will remain an inspiration to all those close to her.
Sue was born September 24, 1932, in Rutherfordton, NC, and raised in Mill Springs, NC, the youngest daughter of James Pinckney Egerton and Pearl Edwards Egerton. She graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a degree in Education and became a life-long teacher. She taught secretarial sciences all her life, beginning at William Fleming High School in Roanoke, VA, then National Business College and later Western Virginia Community College in Roanoke, and finally at Dabney Lancaster Community College in Clifton Forge, VA, until her retirement in 1997. She was also an accomplished pianist who gave up music to educate others.
Sue was an active member of the American Association of University Women, serving as Treasurer of its local chapter for many years. She also was a life member of both Delta Pi Epsilon, a business fraternity, and the UNC-Greensboro Alumni Association. She enjoyed traveling and did so extensively with her family, and then alone with friends or her beloved dog Toby in her retirement years. She became very active in the Good Sam Camping Club with her small RV, making many camping friends along the way.
When living alone became difficult, she moved to Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC, just a few miles from her own family home in Mill Springs, to be near her stepmother, Sarah Elliot Egerton, who she helped care for until Sarah’s death. In her final years, Sue lived at The Colonnades in Charlottesville, VA.
Sue is survived by her son, Richard Howard-Smith, and his wife, Susan Howard-Smith, of Charlottesville, VA; her son, Steven Michalak, and his wife, Anne Michalak, of Raleigh, NC. Sue has also been blessed with six grandchildren, several in-laws, and two great-grandchildren: John Howard-Smith; Virginia Peeples and her husband, Anderson Peeples, and their daughter, Eleanor Reeves Peeples; James Howard-Smith Lusa, and his wife, Dr. Amanda Lusa, and their son, Jackson Howard-Smith Lusa; Kaitlyn Michalak; Sarah Michalak; and Halle Michalak. She was also survived by several nieces and nephews and their spouses (and their children): Thomas Nicholas and Dorsey Egerton; Angie Egerton; Ann Parker Croom and Robert Croom; and David and Joette Parker.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Nicholas Egerton, and his wife, Juanita Fowler Egerton (Greer), and their son, James B. Egerton; her sister, Anita Egerton Parker, and her husband, William O. Parker, and their daughter, Donna Parker; Sue’s former husband, Archie Hugh Smith; and numerous other relatives.
A graveside interment of her ashes will be held Sat. May 28 at 3 pm at Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Polk County Historical Association; educational organizations; organizations that address dementia; or a charity of your choice.
