SALUDA -- Mike passed peacefully taking a nap on Saturday afternoon, April 24, 2021 with his dog in his lap and one of his favorite Westerns on TV.
Michael Sidney Jones (Mike) was born and raised in Fredericktown, MO to the late Sidney Jones and Dorothy DeGuire Jones. Mike was a High School athlete, playing some minor league baseball and starting his college career with a football scholarship to Marquette University, WI. The football program was dropped, so Mike enlisted and served 2 years active duty in the US Army (1954-56). After boot camp, he was stationed in Germany. On returning to the U.S., he enrolled at the Univ. of Missouri, Business School and graduated with an bachelor’s degree in 1960. Mike was married to Sally Flagg in Dec.1959. Mike worked for several pharmaceutical companies throughout his career in TN, AL, MI, and TX, as well as self-start-up businesses.
Their children are Beth Ellen Harris (David Harris) and Patrick Flagg Jones (Denise Sabiston). Mike loved to golf (had a nickname of Iron Mike), enjoyed tennis especially doubles, loved to fish and sailing while living in AL and MI. Mike also enjoyed working with wood, fixing old items, playing cards, collecting coins, pottery, bird, and animal watching. Mike was also known for his “9 lives” after being tossed out of his sailboat, a heart attack, falling on a dock and breaking his neck while fishing, a few car accidents, lymphoma cancer, neuropathy, and a lifetime smoker.
Mike was preceded in death by his second wife Jean in 2014.
In addition to his children, he is survived by his brother Jack Jones, and 5 grandchildren, Tyler and Tana Harris and Logan, Lucas and Kellan Jones, and his dog Beau.
A service is planned on June 4, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. at the Saluda United Methodist Church with Reverend Rob Parsons officiating.
