Obituary

Saluda, NC -- John Gilbert Walker, age 73 of Saluda, NC went to be with Jesus, his Savior, on Sunday morning, the 20th of September 2020.

Gil was born in Longview, TX to James Everett and Lilla Mae Walker. Growing up in Longview, he was active in church, played little league baseball and basketball at Longview High. He attended Kilgore Junior College and graduated from Stephen F. Austin University with a double major in Accounting and Marketing. That is where he met his wife, Ann, whom he married after graduation in 1969. He began his career with the government as an auditor for the General Accounting Office until he was drafted during the Vietnam War. Gil proudly served his country for two years in the Army and was blessed to be stationed at Fort Ord, California.

After the Army, he continued his career with the Federal Energy Administration, traveling extensively. When his daughters were young, Gil took a marketing position in Tyler, TX with Delta Drilling so he could remain home with his family. The sale of that company in 1985 led Gil to Oklahoma City and a new position with Kerr McGee as VP of Marketing. In 1997, after a successful career in the oil and gas industry, Gil fulfilled his dream of opening his own business. Gil and Ann moved across the country to Asheville, NC starting a staffing service with Express Personnel. Working together, they created a well-respected business and served their community. Through their business, Gil was able to impact many lives. He served on the Board of Good Will Industries, volunteered his time with Work First, helped former inmates re-enter the work force, and was an active board member in the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Gil also impacted many through his life-long involvement with church. He served as a deacon in Irving, TX and currently again with his home church, Midway Baptist in Columbus. Through the years he taught Sunday School for little ones, teens and married couples. He mentored and encouraged many others with his strong love for God and Country. Most importantly, he Invested his life focused on his family.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ann Manns Walker, two daughters Dawn Walker Gee of Tryon, NC and Natalie Walker Blakeley and husband Daniel of Prescott Valley, AZ. Gil deeply loved his 5 grandchildren, Brandon Gee and wife Camryn, Brian Gee, Drew Blakeley, Savannah Blakeley and John Blakeley. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Mae Manns of Hendersonville, NC, one brother Brett Walker and wife Martha Ann of Longview, TX, a brother-in-law Gene Lewis and wife Mary of Tyler, TX, a sister-in-law Debbie Manns of Georgetown, TX, two nieces of Tyler, TX Jena June Johnson, husband Jason and daughter Makenzi, Shelly Linville, husband Jeff and sons Austin and Walker, nephews Aaron Manns, wife Sarah and children Winters and Sidney, Andy Manns, fiancée Lola, niece Amy Surko, husband Jack and children Ainslee and John all of the Austin, TX area.

He was proceeded in death by his parents James and Lilla Walker, brother Jim Walker and wife Marian, sister Jimmie June Lewis, father-in-law Tommy Manns and brother-in-law Ron Manns.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 25, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Midway Baptist Church in Columbus, NC with Pastor Peter McDonald officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
