John Woodbury Mifflin of Columbus, NC went peacefully to be with the Lord on June 20, 2021 at age 97. John was born in Houston, TX to parents, Horace Woodbury Mifflin and Bess Irene Freegard.
John spent his childhood in Rock Island, IL where he developed a lifelong interest in trains and model railroading. During WWII he served in the Army Air Corps in Europe, contributing towards surveillance and detecting the location of enemy encampments and facilities and in planning attacks against our foreign enemies. After the war, John worked as a sales rep for Alcoa Aluminum, and then started Mifflin Packaging Inc., which he successfully operated for over 30 years. John liked participating in outdoor sports, either hiking, playing tennis, or biking, and continued to stay active late in life. In 1995 he and wife Donna moved from Marietta, Ga to Santa Fe, NM where John took up snow skiing. In 2013 they returned back East to North Carolina. At age 93, John started a bicycling club - The Cyclepaths - and in 2019 received a medal from his community as Founder Emeritus of the club.
John left a legacy of kindness and love to everyone he encountered.
John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Donna Meador Mifflin; two daughters, Michelle Mifflin Lyle (Wes) and Margo Mifflin Null (Sam); three granddaughters Jessica Lyle Gonzalez, Shayna Makover, and Laura Lyle; three great grandchildren as well as several nieces and a nephew.
