Hendersonville, NC--Jane S. Long, 93, of 334 Thompson Street, Hendersonville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 17, at home with her family.
Born in Morristown, New Jersey, Jane was the daughter of Charles A. Smith and Dorothy Cook Smith. She grew up in Hackettstown, New Jersey, graduated as salutatorian from Hackettstown High School, and earned a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Vermont, Class of 1949. She was a founding member of Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church in Taylors, South Carolina, and more recently an active member of the Congregational Church of Tryon, North Carolina. Beloved as a wife, mother, and grandmother, Jane was always there for any family member, whatever the need might be. She was also active in the greater community, for which she was recognized with a Governor's Award for Community Service and election to the Second Wind Hall of Fame. Her volunteer work included visitations for Hospice, organizing delivery for Meals On Wheels, and singing for seniors with the Carolines, a local a cappella group. Her repertoire as a singer, dating back to her college days, included Rodgers & Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone," a song that captures the uplift that she tried to provide for others.
Jane was preceded in death by her two sisters, Mary Ann Marburg and Sally Brown; her sister-in-law Nancy Smith; and her brothers-in-law, Donald Marburg and Gordon Brown.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Richard Long; her two daughters, Susan Raines of Taylors, South Carolina and Marti Soper of Topsfield, Massachusetts; her two sons, Rick Long of Deltona, Florida and David Long of Norman, Oklahoma; her brother Andy Smith of Verona, New Jersey; her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate Jane's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 28, at the Congregational Church of Tryon, 210 Melrose Avenue, Tryon, North Carolina, with Rev. Marti Soper and Rev. Meghan Young officiating.
The family will receive friends on site at a reception following the ceremony.
