COLUMBUS -- Esther L. McNees of Columbus, North Carolina passed away on April 13, 2021, at the age of 90.
Esther was born to the late Thomas and Lorraine Lloyd in East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but later moved to Edinboro, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Edinboro High School and from Edinboro State Teacher’s College with a bachelor of arts degree.
Esther was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, John. Esther is survived by her three children, Robert McNees (Deborah Haude) of Elmhurst, Illinois; Marianne Hardesty (Myron) of Newark, Delaware; Margaret (“Peggy”) Callahan (Kevin) of Huntington, New York; 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
John’s work required 7 job transfers from Niagara Falls south to Georgia along the east coast, and as far west as Beaumont, Texas. Esther’s work was managing John, the kids and the moves. On the side, she was a substitute teacher and assisted with artificial flower arrangements. Esther and John loved to travel, so upon John’s retirement, Esther arranged many trips nationally (all 50 states) and internationally, including many Road Scholar programs. She also enjoyed bowling, playing bridge, listening to Welsh male choral music, and visiting with her immediate and extended family, which are spread across the country.
Esther participated in many charitable projects, including food pantries and women’s circle. A gentle, happy soul, with a ready smile, she was a friend to many here at Tryon Estates. Esther often said of their many moves, that she and John made friends wherever they were. She treasured her times at Tryon Estates, and if she were here in person, she would wish you all a fond farewell as she leaves to be with her beloved husband.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tryon Presbyterian Church, 430 Harmon Field Road, Tryon, NC 28782 and Black Mountain Home, 80 Lake Eden Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
