TRYON, NC - William Harold Taylor, 93, of Tryon, NC passed away Tuesday morning, July 5, 2016 in St. Luke's Hospital, Columbus, NC following a sudden illness.Born in Greenville County, SC, he was the son of the late Julius Washington Taylor and Mamie Hudson Taylor. Mr. Taylor was a graduate of Tryon High School and was the class president. He served as captain of the football team and basketball team. Mr. Taylor was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army. He retired from Tryon City Schools as the maintenance supervisor. He served as secretary for the Tryon Lions Club, a Boy Scout having earned Eagle Scout. Mr. Taylor was a member of the VFW Post #10349 in Mill Spring. He was a member of Tryon First Baptist Church for over 75 years and served as a deacon.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Taylor; one granddaughter, Allison Taylor MacDonald; two brothers, Fred and Seth Taylor; one sister, Lavinia Eldridge.Surviving is his wife of 74 years, Ruth Day Taylor; one son, Johnny Taylor (Gerry) of Columbus, NC; one daughter, Paulette MacDonald (Rion) of Rutherfordton, NC; one grandson, Brian Taylor (Jennifer) of Columbus; two great-grandchildren, Caroline and Thomas Taylor.A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 8, 2016 in Tryon First Baptist Church with Dr. Jeff Harris and Dr. Darryl Maxwell officiating.Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, NC with military rites by Polk County Veteran Memorial Honor Guard.The family will receive friends prior to the service Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church.Memorials may be made to Tryon First Baptist Church, 125 Pacolet Street, Tryon, NC 28782.
