William "Bill" John Sherman, 81, of Mill Spring, NC, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, November 11, 2016 in his home.Born in Springfields Garden, NY, he was the son of the late Louis and Helen Donnely Sherman. Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked for many years for the Water Authority in New York. Bill and his wife Mary moved to Polk County, NC in 1980 from Long Island, New York. After accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, Bill became heavily involved in every church he attended. He was a former member of Coopers Gap Baptist Church and Emmanuel Baptist Church, and was still a member of Bat Cave Baptist Church. He attended Midway Baptist Church most recently. Bill taught Sunday School for over 25 years, and was a deacon at Coopers Gap Baptist Church. He and Mary were also missionaries to South Africa. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Mary Sherman; a son, William J. Sherman, III of Landrum, SC; a daughter, Helen Blackwell (Ronnie) of Mill Spring, NC; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are many spiritual sons and daughters.A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 19, 2016 in Midway Baptist Church with Rev. Bo Caulder, Rev. Brian Wilson, Rev. Warren Elliott, Rev. David MacEachern, and Rev. Peter McDonald officiating.Burial will be private.Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC 28722.
