Columbus, NC - William Jerome "Jerry" Ross, 68, of Old Highway #19, Columbus, NC died Wednesday. Born in Polk County, NC, he was the son of the late Grady and Mae Gosnell Ross. He joined the Tryon Police Department in 1968 and served as Chief of Police until his retirement in 1987. He served six years with the Polk County Sheriffs Department until his second retirement in 2002. He took pride in his restoring of antique cars, enjoyed camping, being with his grandchildren and his special companion "Bandit". Surviving are his wife Faith Ross; two sons, Mark Ross (Angie), and Chris Ross (Renea); one daughter, Audrea McKaig (Rodney); eight grandchildren, Cameron, Danielle, Jayden and Keinedie Ross, Sean, Tiffany, Jarrett, and Jeremy McKaig, also numerous nieces and nephews. Also survived by one brother, Ronnie Ross (Frankie) of Lenoir, NC, and one sister, Judy Ross (Bill) of Greer, SC. He was predeceased by one brother, Nick Ross. Memorial service will be held 2:00pm Sunday, December 6, 2009 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, NC with Rev. Brian Wilson officiating. Family to receive friends from 6:00pm to 7:30pm Saturday night in the McFarland Funeral Chapel. The family will be at the home of the daughter, Audrea McKaig, 26 Catherine Drive, Holly Hills, Columbus, NC. Memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
