Obituary

Columbus, NC - William Frederick Rainey of Columbus, NC died Saturday, March 17, 2007 at Rosecrest in Inman, SC. He was born in Asheville, NC and was the son of the late Hiram Watson and Bess McCormac Rainey. After graduation from the Decatur Boys High, Decatur, GA he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served overseas with the 2nd Marine Division in action against the Japanese at Saipan and Tinian Islands in the Pacific. Following WW II, he graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering and married the late Leila Swink Grady of Kenly, NC. Before moving to Tryon, NC in 1979, he was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg, SC where he served on the Board of Deacons and was an Elder. He was Chief Engineer at Reeves Brothers, Inc., Spartanburg, SC Corporate Headquarters from 1966 until his retirement in 1988. He was a Registered Professional Engineer and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Survivors include one son, William F. Rainey, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, and one daughter, Sarah Jo Rainey Tunno, of Spartanburg, SC. Two grandchildren, Edward Logan Rainey and Anna Kathryn Rainey Crockett both of Winston-Salem, NC. He was predeceased by his wife, Lelia, of 48 years; a brother, Hiram Watson Rainey Jr., and a sister, Sarah Gray Rainey Glausier. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
