Tryon, NC -- William Joseph McAndrews, 86, of 70 Oak Street, Tryon, NC died Monday, September 4, 2006 in St. Luke's Hospital, Columbus, NC. Born in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late James and Louise Klaus McAndrews. A veteran of World War II, he served in the US Navy. He was sent to Brazil to head the building of tunnels from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro. Mr. McAndrews was a graduate of Yale University. He retired and moved to Tryon in 1982 from Boardman, OH. He was a member of Red Fox Country Club,an avid tennis player, a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, and a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross, Tryon, NC. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Ann Whidden McAndrews of the home; one son, William Harvey McAndrews of Chicago, IL, and one daughter, Ann McAndrews of Columbia, SC. Also surviving is one grandson. Memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. September 15, 2006 in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross, Tryon, NC with Father Michael Doty officiating.
