Tryon, NC - William Porter Coleman, 79, of Tryon, NC, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at White Oak Manor Nursing Home in Tryon, NC. Born in Mason Hall, TN, he was the son of the late Bessie Webb Coleman Waggoner and the late Porter Lee Coleman. Mr. Coleman served briefly in the US Navy prior to a medical discharge in 1945. He received two blue honorable discharge emblems and an honorable service button. Mr. Coleman was retired from Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors. He moved to Tryon from Macon, GA in 1986 with his late wife Carol McClanahan Coleman and enjoyed using his handyman skills helping others as well as serving on a special team of volunteers with Habitat for Humanity. Mr. Coleman was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Landrum, SC. He was a beloved husband, father, and Paw - Paw. We will miss his presence in our family. Surviving are his devoted wife, Bobby Jean Coleman, two daughters, Gail Coleman Huggins of Gulf Breeze, FL and Karen Coleman Wilson (Bruce) of Davisboro, GA , two sons, Gary K. Coleman of Columbia, SC and Philip P. Coleman (Judith) of Byron, GA; two brothers, Lee Coleman (June) of Tomball, TX and Leonard (Buddy) Coleman (Betty) of Daytona, FL; one sister, Mary Tabb (Col. Peyton) of Tryon, NC. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 15 ½ great grandchildren and two devoted feline "kids" Woodie & Willie. A "celebration of life" service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Landrum, SC. Family to receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Habitat for Humanity, 132 N. Trade Avenue, Landrum, SC 29356.
