TRYON, NC -- Walter Alvin Hayes, 92, of Warrior Mtn, Rd., Tryon, NC died Thursday, February 21, 2008 in St. Luke's Hospital in Columbus, NC.Born in Inman, SC he was the son of the late Walter Dean and Ethel Neal Hayes. He was a veteran of WW II having served in the US Army. He was the owner of Hayes Upholstery and was a member of Tryon First Baptist Church. Mr. Hayes was the widower of Gladys Bishop Hayes who died in 2002.Surviving are four daughters, Barbara H. Cochran and husband Tom of Black Creek, WI, Nancy Hayes, Mary Raines, and Jane H. Brock and husband Ronnie all of Tryon, NC; one brother Bill Hayes and wife Mary of Weaverville, NC. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, Matt and Andy Raines of Raleigh, NC, Hannah Raines of Charlotte, NC and Chris Cochran of Milwaukee, WI. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Hayes who died in 1951.Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 23, 2008 in Polk Memorial Gardens with Dr. William Henderson officiating, with military honors by Polk County Memorial Burial Squad.Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC 28722 or charity of choice.
