Verl Lewis Martin, of Tryon, NC, lovingly known as Lew or Lewie, age 77, passed away at his home due to complications from diabetes on November 10, 2025.  He was born October 1, 1948, raised in Kansas City, and graduated from Wyandotte High school in 1966.  He was in the US Navy Reserves and worked for many years in the telecommunications industry.  He was married to Phyllis Pusey Martin for 38 years and lived in Georgia and North Carolina for the majority of his life.  Unfortunately she passed away shortly after Lew on November 19, 2025.  He was a Master Chess player and loved teaching young minds the strategy of playing the game.  A young team that he taught won a national championship.  He loved cats, dogs and corvettes.

He is survived by his children Charlie Lewis Martin (Mandi), Jessica Lynn Martin (Greg Joseph), Jeffrey Matthew Martin (Tiffany), his grandchildren Laken Reilly, Hawke Reilly, Hannah Martin, Jacob Martin, Lexi Martin, Maci Martin and Jeffrey Martin, his sisters Donna Martin Davis (Jack) and Elena Maria Artal Murillo (Tony) and many, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  He lost his father, Charlie Martin in 2010.  His mother Ellen Howell Martin Artal and step mother Betty Jane Martin both died in 2009.  He lost a baby son David Justin Martin in January 1980.  Many others who influenced his life preceded him in death.
