Tryon, NC - Lloyd Oliver Hoffman, III (Trip), age 59, of Tryon, North Carolina died Monday, August 18th, 2014. Trip was born in Omaha, Nebraska and was the son of Joann and Lloyd O Hoffman, Jr. (Bud) also of Tryon. Trip was a graduate of The McDonough School in Baltimore, Md, attended the University of Maryland, the University of the Americas in Mexico City and was a graduate of Porlock Vale Academy in Cornwall, England. Trip was an avid equestrian and held an A rating with the United States Pony Club. He was a selected back up rider of the US Olympics equestrian team of 1980 and held two degrees from the British Horse Society. Trip's equestrian career began in Annapolis, MD where he was a childhood member of the Annapolis Pony Club. He later founded The Greenbrier Stables and was also an active member of the Marlboro Hunt. Trip moved to the Middleburg, Va area in 1978 where he was instrumental in growing The Dominion Saddlery business and also relocated Greenbrier Stables. He founded February Farms, a horse breeding operation, and was involved in the early import, development and breeding of Jack Russell terriers in the US. He was a member of the Middleburg & Orange County Hunts. In 1988, Trip moved to Key West, FL and served on the Board of Old Island Restoration Society for many years. While in Key West, Trip was a real estate agent with Key West Sotheby's International Realty and obtained the recognition as one of the top real estate agent/brokers in the Florida Keys for many years.Trip moved to Tryon in 1997. He was as a dedicated supporter of the Foothills Humane Society and served as a member of the Events Committee and Development Committee of the Tryon Fine Arts Center. His creative talents contributed to the success of many TFAC fundraisers. Trip also served on the Foothills Equestrian Nature Center Board of Directors. He was on the Board of Directors of the Tryon Riding and Hunt Club. As an avid fox hunter, he was a member of the Tryon Hounds where he acted as the social chairman for their hunts and was also a member of the Green Creek Hounds. He was a member of the Tryon Congregational Church.Trip's talents included gardening, reading, traveling and boating. He was known among his many friends and clients for his expertise in decoration and design. Trip embraced life to the fullest. He never met a stranger and made everyone he met feel as if they were his best friend. He is survived by his partner, Scott McFall Lamm, and his parents, Joann and Bud Hoffman. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Thomas of Seattle, Washington; a brother, Rick Hoffman of Washington, DC; his twin sisters, Kate Brown of Annapolis, Md and Beth Maust of Richmond, VA.; and ten nieces and nephews: Abbey and Stuart Thomas; Mimi, Bridget, Chase and Meredith Brown; and Devon, Maggie, Olivia and Ellie Maust. A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, August 28th at 3 pm at The Congregational Church in Tryon. A reception will be held immediately following at Stone Ridge.In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Foothills Humane Society, P.O.
