Obituary

Ted W. Proudfoot, 89, ofLynn died April 7, 2008 at hisresidence.Born in Walla Walla, Wash.,he was the son of the late Harryand Esther Proudfoot. He wasreared on a wheat ranch in easternOregon, where he formed alife-long habit of early rising,working in the fields from ageten. He graduated from the Universityof Oregon with a B.S.degree in 1940. The followingweek he married his high schoolsweetheart, Mitzi Johnson, andbegan a 41-year career withUnocal Corporation (since absorbedby Chevron Corp.)which took him from Oregonand Washington to Califomia andNew York. Three months afterarriving in New York City his belovedwife died of pulmonarythrombosis after hip surgery,leaving him with two lovelydaughters. A year later he marriedMarie Vieux, an expatriateHaitian author who died threeyears later of brain cancer, leavinghim with loving memories,three lovely step-children andfriends in the Haitian community.Despite his somewhat forbiddingmarital history he continuedto be blessed and was fortunateenough to marry in 1973twice widowed Alice-BoydStockdale Beaird (Abie). Thisunion continued as a honeymoontor 25 years and brought him anew family of five devoted stepchildren.In 1980, he retired fromUnocal and operated inBronxville, N.Y., with his wife asmall business designing, producingand selling decorative refrigeratortiles in the 48 contiguousstates. In 1983, competitionfrom S.E. Asia caused them toliquidate the business and in April1984 he and Abie moved toGod's country in Tryon.Active in community affairs,Proudfoot served on the vestryand as senior warden of HolyCross Episcopal Church, wherehe was also an usher, lector andchalicer. He was a long time directorof the St. Luke's HospitalFoundation and of the PolkObituaries County Campus ICC Foundation,Inc., where he twice servedas president. He served terms asdirector of the local chapters ofthe American Heart Associationand the American Cancer Society.He was a national directorof the World Federalist Associationof Washington, D.C., andformed a local chapter which heheaded for eight years. He was amember of the Tryon CountryClub and the Rotary Club ofTryon, which he served as president.In 1991, he and Abie wereinducted together into the SecondWind Hall of Fame. In 1993,he received the Joseph W. WellsMemorial Award from Rotary.He was preceded in death byhis beloved wife.Survivors includehis daughters JudyFalstreaux of Columbus, andMarthea Blewitt of Churchville,Md., and a brother, JohnProudfoot of Hermiston, Ore.Blessed with a large and closelyknit family as a result of his threemarriages, Proudfoot is also survivedby step-children SallyStockdale Munoz, GrantStockdale and Susan StockdaleMann, all of Washington, D.C.,Ann Stockdale of Gig Harbor,Wa., and Lee Stockdale ofTryon. Additional surviving stepchildrenare Lee Beaird of PassA Grill, Fla., and Pierre Chauvet,Marilyse Charlier and RegineCharlier, all of Port au Prince,Haiti. Additional survivors include22 grandchildren and stepgrandchildrenand seven greatgrandchildren.Internment will be in theMemorial Garden of the Churchof the Holy Cross. Memorial serviceswill be at the church at 11a.m. on Saturday, April 26, withRev. Michael Doty officiating,followed by a champagne reception.The public is invited.Memorials may be made toHospice of the Carolina Foothills,130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus,N.C. 28722.
