SALUDA, NC - Sophie Pearson Summers, 91, of Saluda, NC passed away Thursday, January 7, 2010 in Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher, NC.Born in Saluda, NC, she was the daughter of the late John Ellis Pearson, Sr. and Margaret Moore Pearson and the widow of John W. Summers who died in 1992. Mrs. Summers was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, Saluda, NC. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann S. Whitaker and a grandson, Timothy Whitaker who died in 1985; seven sisters, Sara Rodgers, Margaret Sullivan, Alice Parker, Isabel Hill, Elizabeth Henn, Catherine Rubel and Jessie Short and one brother, John E. Pearson, Jr.Surviving are one daughter, Sandra S. Baumberger (Philip) of Saluda, NC; four grandchildren, Jill Pence of Hendersonville, NC, Jessica Justice, Tracy Stepp and Eric Baumberger all of Saluda, NC; one brother, Charles W. Pearson, Sr. of Tryon, NC; one sister, Vera P. Bishop of Greenville, SC. Also surviving are 7 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 10, 2010 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, NC with Rev. John Zellner officiating.Burial will be in Saluda City Cemetery, Saluda, NC.The family will receive friends just prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 pm Sunday in the McFarland Funeral Chapel.Memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, P.O. Box 275, Saluda, NC 28773.At other times, the family will be at the home of her daughter, Sandra Baumberger, 134 Summers Drive, Saluda, NC.
