COLUMBUS, NC -- Ruth Estelle Tufts, 91, a resident of Tryon Estates for the last 15 years, died on Tuesday, August 19, 2008. She was the wife of the late Orren Barton Tufts and daughter of the late Oscar and Sadie Herfurth. For years, as a hospital volunteer, she worked tirelessly for scholarship aid. She was an avid bridge player, and loved flower arranging and gardening. She was also very active in her church, First Lutheran of Greensboro. She is survived by her brother, The Reverend Lawrence Herfurth of Spring Hill, FL. She also leaves two daughters, Barbara Ulrichs of Southport, NC and Anne Tufts of Sun City Center, FL and three grandchildren, Scott Ulrichs of Bozeman, MT, Wendy Kochan of Middleton, WI, and David Ulrichs of Asheville, NC. In addition she leaves seven great-grand children. A memorial service will be held at Tryon Estates on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC 28722.
