Obituary

Tryon, NC- Ramona Fisher Potter died on 3/7/2018. She was born to Claude and Esther Lanning Fisher in Tryon, NC, now deceased. Also preceding her in death were husband Thomas Potter, sister Pat Buckwell and sister Claudia Benson. She is survived by daughter Beth Potter Ward and sons Neil and Mike Potter. Grandchildren John Potter, Derek Ward, David Potter, Matt Ward, Zachary Potter, Audrey Potter, Anna Potter, Miles Potter, and great grandchildren Adrian Ward, and Jaxson Ward. Mona was active in her High School years at Lee Edwards High school. She was selected to Girls state at the National High School Speech Institute at Northwestern. She was awarded a scholarship to Ripon College where she was involved in Student Government and won the Shakespeare award. After college she returned to Asheville and began her teaching career at Sand Hill High School. In 1953 she traveled to Japan to teach at an Air Force base in Misawa. In 1954 Mona married Tom Potter, a classmate at Ripon College. He agreed to take her south in 1955. Mona taught at Myers Park High School and started a speech program which continues today.Mona's three children were the focus of her life, but she loved teaching. To fit their schedule, she taught at Charlotte College and became the public relations director while it was becoming part of the University of North Carolina System. Mona enjoyed her years as a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teachers Sorority and served as president of the Sigma and Beta Chapters in Richmond, Virginia.Following her husband's career, Mona moved to Richmond, Virginia. Mona taught for many years at Tucker High school where she started another speech program. She found great satisfaction watching students gain self-confidence and win national and state awards. When the family moved to Nashville, TN she became active in the community. She served as president of the League of Women Voters in Williamson County, and was president of the New Neighbors League. She volunteered at Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum later serving as President of the Friends of Cheekwood.Mona had many accomplishments, including Speech Teacher of the Year in the state of Virginia. She was a world traveler, teaching English as a volunteer in China through the Baptist foreign Mission Board. She was privileged to be a member of Reed Memorial Baptist Church in Asheville, N.C., First Baptist in Charlotte, First Baptist in Richmond, Virginia where she and Tom led the Young Couples Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the First Baptist church in Nashville, TN. and a member of First Baptist Church in Asheville.Limited by diminishing vision, Mona moved to Givens Estates, declaring she was returning home to the mountains. Mona left this world grateful for a useful, happy, life, and looking forward to joining Tom and her many relatives. She was a seventh-generation member of the Fisher family in Western North Carolina.Internment will be at the family plot at the Tryon city cemetery in Tryon, North Carolina on March 10, 2018.Memorials may be given to Habitat for Humanity, or Solace Hospice Center in Asheville, NC.
