IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert
Dehoney
July 13, 1927 – April 2, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the departure of Robert Joseph Dehoney on April 2nd, at the age of 97. Bob passed away peacefully after a brief battle with pneumonia. He is survived by his daughters Joanne Dehoney, Susan Bradley, Catherine Dehoney, and Eleanor Dehoney, as well as seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Born near Paris, France in 1927 to Tom and Yvonne Dehoney, Bob grew up in Upper Montclair, New Jersey and served in the US Navy in 1945 and 1946. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology following his military service and graduated with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1950.
Starting with Allen B. DuMont Labs in 1950, Bob had a long and productive career as an electrical engineer. His early work was in UHF television transmission and he was part of the crew that put a radio tower on top of the Empire State Building. Bob spent most of his career with Fairchild Schlumberger in New Jersey and New York. He worked on military electronics, traveling widely in support of diverse military electronic systems. Bob authored numerous technical articles and wrote computer programs that were widely used in the industry. He was a member of the Association of Old Crows as well as the Institute of Radio and Electronic Engineers.
Bob married Barbarah McDonald of Startex, SC in 1955. They cultivated a loving, close-knit family. As it grew, Bob welcomed each new arrival with unconditional love. They raised their family in Glen Ridge and Upper Montclair, New Jersey and later in Huntington Station, NY. He retired in 1988 and he and Barbarah moved to Isle of Palms, SC and then later to Columbus, NC.
One of Bob's chief joys in life was tinkering
-
making something designed for one thing do something else or rescuing something from oblivion and making it useful again. Never without his pocket protector, he always had a shop of one sort or another, and with house maintenance, car upkeep, and projects for family and friends, Bob remained busy and vital throughout his life. Among his many hobbies, Bob loved jazz and had an extensive and esoteric record collection.
Bob was deeply involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren and was greatly beloved by all of them. He will be greatly missed.
