Richard John Wheeler, 90 years old, of Tryon Estates, Columbus NC, passed away from natural causes, Sunday Feb. 7, 2021.Richard was born in Ottawa, Ontario,Canada, on August 1,1930. He was the son of the late John D. Wheeler and Gladys Shea Wheeler. Richard was a Chemical Engineer, a graduate of Queen's University. He worked for Cyanimide in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. In 1968 he transferred to the Headquarters in Wayne. N.J, and in 1974 he was afforded the opportunity to work in Bogota Colombia for 18 months.Dick met Bernice Liddiard when he moved to Niagara Falls in 1955, They were married in 1957 and had three daughters. They moved to Oakland, NJ in 1968, lived in Bogota Colombia in 1974-75, and returned to Oakland before retiring to Hendersonville, NC in 1994. He had been a member of the United Church of Canada, Pond's Dutch Reformed Church in Oakland, NJ, Trinity Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, NC, and Tryon Presbyterian Church. Music was a big part of Dick's life. He and Bernie went to many concerts and supported the Arts wherever they lived. He also enjoyed drawing, reading and crossword puzzles. He enjoyed traveling around the country and the world, with Bernice and he loved summer vacations at the beach with his family. Richard lost his beloved Bernice September 25, 2020. He is survived by their daughters Lynn (Sammy) Wheeler-Sahm, Wiesbaden Germany, Jan (John) Metz, Vienna, Va, and Sharon (Scott) Civil, Yardley, PA; grandchildren Shannon Soylag- Sahm, Glenn, Andrew, and Stephen Metz, Danielle and Alyssa Civil; his sister Sylvia Paul, Ontario, Canada and brother Barry Wheeler Ontario, Canada; and 13 nieces and nephews in Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister June Howard and his brother James Wheeler.
