Richard Carl Lindsey "Dick" was born in Irvona, PA to Norris Clair and Helen Lucille (Killian) Lindsey and had three siblings: Bob, Ken, and Dave. The family moved to Wilmington, Delaware where the boys grew up. Dick graduated from Wilmington High School in 1957. Dick married the love of his life, Elaine Murray, in 1963, while he was earning a Bachelor of Science in Theology from Nyack College.Dick's life verse (written in personal words, adapted from Ephesians 2:10 KJV) was: "I am His workmanship, I was created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that I should walk in them."Dick's work career reflected his love of helping others. In 1966, he began his work career as director of several different YMCAs in New York, where he served until 1974. In 1974 he was asked to lead the maintenance of a children's home and school in Asheville, NC. He felt that God was calling him to use his skills and his love of ministering to others, so the family came south. In 1981 Dick joined the maintenance staff of Columbia International University at Ben Lippen School. When Ben Lippen moved to the CIU campus in Columbia, SC, he joined the team there. In this role, God showed him how his work on a maintenance team could also minister to the spiritual and emotional needs of others.Dick Retired from CIU in 2010 to Mill Spring, NC and continued maintenance work as a volunteer for anyone who needed help. He and Elaine then moved to Hendersonville where he continued to help neighbors and volunteered to help with the physical plant at Grace Mills River.Throughout his life, Dick wanted to be of service to his community. Dick joined West Buncombe Volunteer Fire Department in 1974, where he served the community until 1988. He became an Emergency Medical Technician and was one of the first Intermediate Level certified EMT's in Western North Carolina. He rose through the ranks to become Assistant Fire Chief. He also served the youth of NC as a high school football referee. When he moved to Columbia, he continued to referee high school football for a total of 40 years. He served the ministry as an Adult Sunday School teacher and a member of The Gideons. When he retired, he joined Grace Foothills and served as an Elder. He took his nomination to serve as a deacon with joy and commitment, eager to attend all the training.Dick is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dr. Elaine Murray Lindsey; son, Dr. Richard Craig Lindsey and his wife, Princess Tracy; and daughter, Carla "CJ" Lindsey; and, finally by one beloved grandchild, Michael Thomas Lindsey. He is also survived by his brother Ken and many nieces and nephews.A celebration of Dick's life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 6, 2023 at Grace Mills River. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Columbia International University Scholarship Fund (https://www.ciu.edu/, Scholarship Fund, "Servant Leader Scholarship") or Grace Mills River https://secure.myvanco.com\YM6X\home, Dick Lindsey Memorial GMR Diaconate Fund).
