Phyllis Pusey Martin, age 78, who passed on November 19, 2025.
She was a loving daughter, big sister and aunt who valued family and education, loved her kitties, enjoyed travel, and was a voracious reader. In retirement, she volunteered at the Polk County Historical Association and was a member of a book club and quilting club.
Phyllis graduated from Kings Mountain High School (Kings Mountain, N.C.) and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro as a Katherine Smith Reynolds Scholar; and earned a Masters Degree from North Carolina State University. She taught high school math for several years; was self-employed as an educational consultant; traveled the State of Georgia as a textbook representative for math textbooks; and worked for 20 years for the State of Georgia Department of Education in establishing mathematics curricula for Georgia public schools.
Phyllis is survived by a sister, Marilyn Pusey Hamilton, and a brother, David Lee Pusey; nephews Anthony Jarvis, Tim Walker, and Justin Walker and niece Marilyn Stockton, and their children; three stepchildren, Charlie Martin, Jessica Martin, and Jeff Martin, and their children; and numerous cousins. She was predeceased by her father, Norman Hill Pusey and her mother, Grace Lee Pittman Pusey; husbands Edward Praytor and Lew Martin; uncles Royce Pusey (Carolyn), Harold Pittman (Frances), Homer Pittman (Evelyn), and Charles Pittman (Mary Jo); and aunts Isobel Pusey, Virl Case (Herman), Violet Williams (Bill), Opal Sauve (Jack), and Joycie Wilson. Her family and friends mourn Phyllis' passing, but she is now rejoicing with her mother, father, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 25, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the McFarland Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel with Reverend Lynette Sills officiating.
Interment will follow in Hickory Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Columbus.
