Obituary

Lt. Col. Peter P. Genero U.S. Army (Ret.) passed away on December 18, 2017, at Laurelwoods Assisted Living in Columbus, North Carolina. He was 96 years old. A native of Rosendale, New York, he is survived by his children, Laura Genero, of Alexandria, Virginia; Linda Sklaren of Brooklyn, New York; Mark Genero of Landrum, South Carolina; Peter Genero Jr. of Salisbury, Maryland; grandchildren Signe Pereira, Robyn Sklaren, Marit Genero Johnson, Catherine Genero, Adam Sklaren; and, sister Rita Genero Pfeiffer, 99, of Vero Beach, Florida. Col. Genero was a World War II combat veteran, serving in the South Pacific theater on the Fiji Islands, Espiritu Santo, New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Green Island, Bougainville, Lae-Hollandia and Leyte, and then in the occupation of Japan. Among other honors, he was awarded the Soldiers Medal for rescuing the crew trapped in the burning wreckage of a cargo transport on Leyte Island. After the war he earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Maryland, and an M.S. in Public Administration and Finance from George Washington University. As a War Plans Advanced Weapons Effects and Logistics Officer in the Pentagon, he was charged with writing a report that concluded the U.S. would be "neither all Red nor all dead" in the aftermath of a USSR nuclear strike. In the 1960s and 1970s he was an advisor to the governments of Iran and South Vietnam. After retiring from 26 years of active military duty, he served as an economic development officer for Latin America with the State of Florida, helping to transform Miami into a business center for the Americas. Col. Genero was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, as well as a member of the Miami Chamber of Commerce and the Treasure Coast Writers Guild. He authored four books including a handbook for lectors in the Catholic Church, an industrial history of New York state (Blame Rosendale), and a 2-volume set of memoirs (Reminiscences of the 20th Century). A funeral service will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Rosendale, New York on January 6, 2018, followed by internment at St. Peter's Cemetery in Rosendale, New York
