Tryon-
Ouida Katherine Spalding passed away on December 21, 2023, in Tryon, NC.
Ouida (means yes-yes in French and Russian) was born on April 5, 1942. She grew up in Hyattsville, Maryland. She attended Frostburg State University for her bachelor's degree and went onto earn two master's degrees from other institutions leading her to a leadership position as an elementary school principal in California.
Ouida enjoyed traveling immensely and always had a new location she was planning to visit. Her love of travel took her to many of the states and encompassed six of the seven continents. Some places of note were Russia, France, Uruguay, Thailand, Hong Kong, India, Nepal, Argentina, Iceland, Hawaii, Mexico, and many more adventurous locations. Her love of animals, specifically horses is what ultimately lead her to retire to Tryon in 2004.
She was a volunteer coordinator for Hospice of the Carolina Foothills and was an active member of the community with various organizations like the Green Blades Garden Club, Tryon Hounds, Carolina Carriage Club, and the Foothill's Riding Club to name a few. Ouida enjoyed driving horses in her early days of becoming a North Carolina resident. She was passionate about the Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE) and their TROT therapeutic riding program.
She is survived by her three nephews, Brett, Bryan and Brendon Spalding and their families.
A celebration of life will take place later this spring for family, neighbors, and friends.
