Tryon, N.C. - Norma Aldine Young Warder, 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 22, 2007 at White Oak Manor, Tryon, NC. Born in Buffalo, NY, she was reared by her parents Norman and Margaret Young in Lancaster, NY. Norma married Thomas Grayston Warder on March 5, 1938 and together they led an eventful married life of 68 years until his death Oct. 8, 2006. Tom's career in the US Navy and the glass container business took them to a variety of locales including Newport News, VA; Pomona, CA; Joliet, IL; Edison, NJ; Fullerton, CA; Bethany Beach and Millsboro, DE; Covington, LA and finally, Tryon. She became an expert in moving and always created and managed a loving home. She led an active social life and gave birth to four children: Margaret, Thomas, Jr., Michael and Carrie. Norma was not shy to express an opinion and encouraged her children to do likewise. She also passed on the value of hard work and honesty. At various points in her life she was active in local community and public affairs including the League of Women Voters, various local homes for unwed mothers, Meals on Wheels, and she was a generous supporter of the Salvation Army. An avid consumer of the news, she would not hesitate to write a letter to her congressman or senator on issues of the day. She always enjoyed a good laugh. She was a wonderful cook and loved good food, an interest she passed on to all of her children. Upon Tom's retirement in l975 they moved to Bethany Beach, DE where they enjoyed a beach home for several decades, and visits from children and grandchildren. She was never so happy as when her family visited. These were very good years, but eventually they sold their home and moved inland to Millsboro, DE. In 2002, they moved to Covington, LA to be closer to their children. Hurricane Katrina prompted one more move in August 2005 to Tryon, NC close to their daughter, Margaret. Surviving are the four children: Margaret, Thomas, Jr., Michael and Carrie; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Per her wishes there will be no funeral or memorial service. Donations may be sent to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 2387, Hendersonville, NC 28793.
