Obituary

COLUMBUS, NC -- Muriel Garney Nash, 94, of Laurel Lake Dr., Tryon Estates, Columbus, NC died Sunday, June 17, 2012 in St. Luke's Hospital, Columbus, NC.Born in Lynn, MA, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Edna Ricker Garney. She was a graduate of Wheaton College of Norton, MA and Boston University and worked a number of years for financial and insurance firms in Boston. She was an avid musician, playing flute in the Lynn Symphony, where she met her future husband, Thomas H. Nash, Jr. In subsequent years she also played the cello and attended many music performances in Brevard, Durham, Greenville and Tryon. In 1959 the family moved to Durham, NC, and she took part time employment in the Dept. of Zoology at Duke University. Subsequently, she and Tom moved to Tryon in 1985 and lived for a number of years in the Nash home on Glenwalden Circle before moving into Tryon Estates at its inception. Mrs. Nash was an active member of the American Red Cross and the Lanier Library in Tryon and volunteered with many other organizations. Surviving is her son, Thomas H. Nash III, of Madison, WI and a grandchild, Kimberly Nash of New York City.Memorial services will be held at a later date.Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC 28722.
