MONK PHILLIPSCOLUMBUS, NC -- Melvin Grady "Monk" Phillips, 87, of 701 Peniel Rd., Columbus, NC died Monday, April 03, 2006 at his home. Born in Polk County, NC, he was the son of the late Jesse Alexander and Maude McCurry Phillips. He was a veteran of WW II having served in the US Army where he was a paratrooper. Monk was retired from Tryon Federal Bank in Tryon, NC and was a past member of Tryon Volunteer Fire Department, and Past President of Polk County Little League Baseball where he coached for 21 years. Surviving is his wife, Madge Johnson Phillips of the home. One son, Larry Phillips of Tryon, NC. One brother, Jack Phillips of Columbus, NC. One sister, Shirley Edwards of Tryon, NC. One step-daughter, Diane Lanford of Landrum, SC, and one step-son, Nick Russell of Sylva, NC. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, Gabriel, Jeremy, Grant and Reed Phillips; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Brittani Phillips and one step-granddaughter, Alana Lanford. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2006 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel in Tryon, NC with Dr. Chris Osborn officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbus, NC with military rites by Polk County Memorial Burial Squad. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be made to Tryon Volunteer Fire Department, 423 N.
