Columbus, NC - Mary Etta Ray Shambaugh, 81, of Columbus, NC passed away Sunday, January 10, 2016 at the Hospice House of The Carolina Foothills in Landrum, SC.Born in Haywood Co. she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Eugenia Nelson Ray. Mary was also predeceased by her brother Arthur Lee Ray.Mary worked and retired from Polk County (NC) School System after over 40 years of dedicated service. She was very devoted to her community; she worked with Thermal Belt Outreach as a volunteer and she was a member, treasurer and an Elder at Columbus Presbyterian Church. Mary was also a member of the Columbus Town Planning Board and an active member of NCAEOP. Mary was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. She loved her children and her dog Bo. She also was an avid reader, enjoyed theatre and travel.Mary is survived by her son Keith; two daughters Karen and Katrina; and two brothers Harry Gordon Ray (Pat) and Jerry Dean Ray.A Celebration of her Life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Columbus Presbyterian Church with Reverend, Dr. Phil Dunford officiating.
