Obituary

Tryon, NC- Mark C. Pleune, 87, of Tryon, NC, formerly of East Grand Rapids, Michigan, died Saturday, November 4, 2006 following an injury sustained in a fall in August. He was born in Grand Rapids, MI, son of the late Henry M. and Elsie V. Pleune. He was a graduate of East Grand Rapids High School and the University of Michigan, class of 1941 where he was a member of Chi Psi fraternity. He served in World War II and was called back to active duty during the Korean Campaign, after which he retired as a captain. Mr. Pleune spent his working years in insurance and real estate in Grand Rapids, MI. In 1988 he and his wife, Rosemary, retired to Tryon, NC. He was a 50 year member of Kiwanis, worked for Habitat for Humanity for 18 years and served as a Hospice Volunteer. As a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, he held numerous positions. A former member of the Tryon Country Club, he enjoyed golf. Mr. Pleune was a gifted artist in woodcarving. Mark Pleune leaves his wife of 64 years Rosemary Smith Pleune, formerly of Paw Paw, MI, two sons, Mark C. Pleune, Jr. of Suttons Bay, MI, T. Scott and his wife Gay of Hartsville, SC and Lake Adger, NC; four grandsons, Jeffrey, wife Carol and their children Mitchell and Madeline of Rochester Hills, MI, Andrew and wife Patricia of Portland, OR, T. Todd, wife Heather and their children Caroline and Anne of Perrysburg, OH, S. Benjamin, wife Jill and their son Henry of Charlotte, NC and one granddaughter Carrie and husband Michael Christensen of Chicago, IL. He also leaves one sister, Mary Ellen Haan and husband Edward of Brighton, MI, one brother-in-law Wenley Q. Smith of DesPlains, IL and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. November 25, 2006 at the Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Robert Barrows officiating.
