Obituary

Marie Arledge Barton, 95, of Acworth, Ga., formerly of Rutherfordton, NC, passed away peacefully at home on June 3, 2023.
Born Marie Pearl Arledge on August 20, 1927, in Tryon, NC, to Birch Edward Arledge and Janie Louise Arledge, Marie grew up in Tryon before settling in Rutherfordton with her husband Andrew Edward Barton, where she raised her family.
Ree Ree, as she was lovingly known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was famous for her home cooking, particularly her apple pies. She was most at home in her garden, where she grew a variety of vegetables, including corn, green beans, October beans, and tomatoes, which she freely shared with family, friends, and neighbors. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton, having trusted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior from a young age. Marie's heart was with the youngest of her congregation, ministering to generations of the church's children in the nursery for 56 years. In addition to the love she shared in the church, she served for 16 years as a kindergarten paraprofessional at Rutherfordton Elementary School.
Marie is preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Andrew, sister Louise (Fred) Powell, brothers Thomas (Josephine) Arledge and Robert Arledge, and son-in-law Joseph Guffey. She is survived by her sons Robert (Julie) Barton, Bruce (Mary) Barton, and Boyce (Diane) Barton; daughter Janie Guffey; grandchildren Bryan (Lee Ann) Barton, Carolyn (Matt) Tripp, Michael (Karah) Barton, Rachel Barton and Ilya Nazarov, Chad Barton, Chase Barton, Chance Barton, Kirby (David) Gibson, Bryn (Emily) Barton, Drew (Abbey) Guffey, and Paige (Joe) Pendino; brother James (Fannie) Arledge; sisters Karen (Ken) Carruth and Nancy (Mike) Lewellyn; sister- in-law Ruth Ann Arledge; daughter-in-love Alice Barton; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
The family would especially like to thank her long-time caregiver Michelle Brown, whose love for and dedication to "Miss Ree" is beyond measure. A memorial for family is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton's Children's Ministry.
