Columbus, NC - Lucille Sanders Leyland, 85, of Laurel Lake Drive, Columbus, NC died Friday, January 15, 2010 in Tryon Estates.Born in Ashland, KY, she was the daughter of the late Merle T. and Loretta Byrne Sanders. She was the widow of Dr. Harry M. Leyland who died in 1996. Mrs. Leyland was the Valedictorian of Holy Family High School, class of 1942 and was a graduate of the College of Mount St. Joseph, Cincinnati, OH with highest honors. She attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Lucille lived from 1962 to 1987 in the Cincinnati area. During that time Lucille was the Director of the Infectious Disease Lab at Children's Hospital and was a member of the research team that developed the oral polio vaccine with Dr Albert Sabin. She was a volunteer with Bethesda North Hospital in Cincinnati, OH, an avid golfer, enjoyed traveling the world and was a great cook and a wonderful mother.Surviving are two sons, Dr. Steven Leyland (Patricia) of Inman, SC and Michael Leyland (Dana) of Manhattan Beach, CA. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher and Stephanie Leyland. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Ft. Meyers, FL.Memorials may be made to The Dr. Harry M.
