John Robert Landolt, known as "Jack" by his loving family and many friends, passed away peacefully at his home in Columbus, North Carolina on April 7, 2015, at the age of 95, after a long and fulfilling life. Jack was born on March 15, 1920, in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late, Charles F. and Isabel G. Landolt. He married Virgina Gordon in 1940 and had three daughters. Formerly of Whispering Pines, North Carolina, Poland and Youngstown, Ohio, Jack was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church and Masonic Order #18 Wick Avenue Lodge, Youngstown, Ohio. He served in World War II as a Naval Aviation Machinist Mate First Class and retired as Superintendent of Bessemer Works of US Steel. Jack's varied experiences and abilities prepared him to be a longtime leader in the Episcopal Church, a Warden for the Master's Golf Tournament, Habitat for Humanity volunteer, enthusiastic cook, and a key figure in many groups.Jack's ability to see all things as having potential led him to effectively create beautiful homes and furnishings for his family. Every house the family purchased was refurbished by Jack to become a warm home of art and family history. Music and laughter bubbled out with Jack's sense of humor, Virginia's love of music, their daughters, and the family pets. In his later years, Jack designed intricate hand-made wooden items, each a masterpiece of craftsmanship. His generosity has resulted in many examples of his exquisite work being treasured by families throughout the country. Jack was preceded in death by Virginia G. Landolt, his loving wife of 56 years. He is survived by daughters Barbara Landolt Pettycrew and husband Jack of Athens, Texas; Laurraine Landolt and husband Paul E. Miller III of Lovettsville, Virginia, and Judith Landolt-Korns and husband Richard Korns of Clifton, Virginia. Grandchildren include Wendy Pettycrew Travis and Justin Pettycrew of Texas; Kathleen Cunningham and Paul Everette Miller IV of West Virginia. Great-grandchildren include Chandler and Mason Travis, Jessy, Cassidy and Ashby Jack Pettycrew of Texas; and Noa and Eli Mason and Max and Zac Cunningham of West Virginia. Jack will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. His Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on April 13, 2015 in the Chapel at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross in Tryon, North Carolina. A reception for family and friends will be held from 1:00 - 3:00pm at Tryon Estates, Columbus, North Carolina.
