COLUMBUS -- John Hanley Gibbs, 87, of Columbus, NC died Thursday, July 14, 2011 in Autumn Care Nursing Center, Forest City, NC.Born in Polk County, NC, he was the son of the late Callaway Burgin and Florence Jackson Gibbs. He was a veteran of WW II having served in the US Army, a member of the VFW Post 10349 and the Woodmen of the World. Mr. Gibbs was the husband of Omie Lee Laughter Gibbs who died in 1986.Surviving include one daughter, Patsy Gibbs Toney (Dean) of Rutherfordton, NC; son, Harold Gibbs of Rutherfordton, NC; one sister, Alvah Gibbs of Columbus, NC; and a brother , Herbert Gibbs of Mill Spring, NC. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, Randy Toney (Kimberly) and Marc Toney (LeeAnn), Lora Brock (Jeff), Jeffrey Gibbs (Colleen)and Elizabeth Gibbs and 6 great grandchildren, Mason Toney, Kevin Gibbs, Anthony Brock, Bryan Gibbs, Nick Gibbs, and Zane Gibbs.Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2011 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon, NC.Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, NC with Military Rites by the Polk County Memorial Burial Squad.The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service in the McFarland Funeral Chapel.Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.
