Columbus, NC- John Wesley Clark, Sr., 93, of 475 Holly Hill Drive, Columbus, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 9, 2006 at his home.Born in Irwin, PA, he was the son of the late Elizabeth Short and Thomas Clark. Mr. Clark was a graduate of Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and received a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh in education. He taught history at Kiski Preparatory School in Pennsylvania before starting his career at Rust Engineering Corporation in both Pittsburgh and Birmingham. He retired as Senior Vice President after 33 years of service. Mr. Clark moved to Columbus 22 years ago from Santa Rosa Beach, FL. He was an active member of the Congregational Church of Christ, Tryon, NC. Mr. Clark was extremely active in the community including, but not limited to, Second Wind Hall of Fame, Tryon Little Theater, Literacy Council, Tryon Fine Arts Center, Friends of Polk Library, Polk County Courthouse Restoration and the American Heart Association. He received the Governor's Award for outstanding volunteer service in North Carolina in 2000. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Beall Clark who passed away in 1999.Surviving includes one son, John W. "Jay" Clark, Jr. and wife Judy of Steele, AL and one daughter, Mary C. Brown and husband William Robert of Stockbridge, GA. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 12, 2006 in the Congregational Church of Christ, Tryon, NC with Rev. Robert Barrows officiating.In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the Congregational Church of Christ Building Fund, 210 Melrose Ave., Tryon, NC 28782.
