Obituary

Tryon, NC- Joan R. Zandbergen, 81, of Tryon, NC died August 10, 2008 in Spartanburg Regional Hospital. She was born May 14, 1927 in Oak Park, IL to the late Garland Whistler Reese and Ruth Clapp Reese of New York City, NY. She was preceded in death by her husband H.P. "Dutch" Zandbergen of Oyster Bay, NY and Tryon. Mrs. Zandbergen is survived by her son Peter W. Zandbergen and wife Kristae of Omaha, NE and daughter Nancy Z. Wilson and husband Jim Bob of Flat Rock, NC. Also surviving are grandchildren, J.B. Wilson and Mary Kenson Wilson of Flat Rock, NC. Mrs. Zandbergen was a graduate of Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY. An educator and a high school and collegiate level field hockey coach, Joan was also a leader in the Episcopal Church and served in altar guilds in the Chicago area for many years. Long time referee and judge for the sport of rowing throughout the southeast region and across the United States, "Mama Z" was honored with the 2001 Jack Franklin Life Achievement Award by the United States Rowing Association. An avid golfer, Joan was proud to be a member of the Tryon Country Club and past President of the Women's Golf Association. A memorial service will be held in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross, 150 Melrose Ave., Tryon, NC 28782 on Thursday, August 14th, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Michael Doty and Rev. Robert Liebenow officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC. Condolences may be sent to Nancy Z.
