Obituary

TRYON, NORTH CAROLINA -- James ("Jim") Holly, 73, of Tryon, North Carolina, passed away on August 6, 2024.  A native of Aiken, South Carolina, he was born to Charles Marion and Gwendolyn Cone Holly in 1950.  Because of the grace he received from God, Jim dedicated his life to both his Christian faith and public service in order to positively impact the lives of others.

Jim graduated from Aiken High School in 1968 and then attended the University of South Carolina Aiken followed by the University of South Carolina where he graduated in 1972.  He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law and began a lifetime of public service to the city and county of Aiken as well as the state of South Carolina.  Due to his exemplary service to the state of South Carolina, including his work in the Attorney General's office, Jim was awarded The Order of the Palmetto, the state's highest civilian honor, at the age of 34.

Jim was known in the community and amongst his colleagues for his kindness, integrity, diligence, and expertise.  He was known in the church for his Christlike compassion, unfailing willingness to serve, and devotion to Kairos Prison Ministry.  He was known by his family for his love of fine Ethiopian coffee, hiking in the mountains of western North Carolina, and telling "Dad Jokes" which they lovingly refer to as "Jim's Gems".

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Marion and Gwendolyn Holly; sister, Carolyn Beiers; and nephew, Joshua Sullivan.  He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Holly; children, Michael (Julie) Holly of Birmingham, AL; Matthew (Emily) Holly of Nashville, TN; and Kimberly (Marty) Sawyer of Aiken, SC; five grandchildren, Brynna (Daniel), Kelsey (Rob), Lena, Davis, and Mattie; and one great-grandchild, Boone.  He is also survived by his brother, Charles Holly (Tim Brooks); brother-in-law, Fred Beiers; nieces and nephews, Russ (Kay) Porter, Holly Moore, and Jonathan (Taylor) Beiers; and many "Cone" cousins and other numerous family members.
