Mary Jane Wilson Wetherell went to her Heavenly home on January 7, 2025 at Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC. Janey was born on November 18, 1923 in High Point NC. She was the daughter of the late Julius Vassie Wilson, Sr. and Lucy White Kirkman Wilson. She graduated from High Point High School and received a scholarship to Judson College in Marion, AL where she earned a teaching certificate. Janey received another full scholarship to the Women's College of the University of North Carolina, where she earned degrees in both chemistry and physics. Upon graduation she married Arthur Laird Wetherell and worked in the lab for DuPont Company in New Jersey. When her husband was shipped overseas during World War II, she went to Daytona Beach, FL to teach science at Seabreeze High School. In 1946 she moved back to High Point, NC. and later to Evansville, IN.
Janey was a true trail blazer. She became involved in the Junior League and became the first female member of the Evansville YMCA Board of Directors. She also became interested in learning to fly an airplane and, in 1964, became a small aircraft pilot. She eventually earned her commercial license and instrument rating and flew charter trips for the local flight service stations.
In 1981, Janey and Art retired to Lake Wylie, SC where she enjoyed golf and many other activities. Janey and Art later moved to the mountains in Waynesville, NC where they enjoyed their little slice of heaven for many years.
Janey is survived by her sons: Fred (Lindy) of Lake Wylie, SC : Larry (Barbara) of North Augusta, SC : Wilson (Cat) of Missoula, Montana ; Grandchildren Rick (Bara), Alex (Jessica), and Michael (Sarah) Wetherell; Anne Wetherell Drobny (Eric) ; Mark Wetherell and 8 great grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
Janey's family would like to express profound gratitude to the staff of Tryon Estates and the Oakbridge Terrace staff. A special thanks to Luann Talbert for all of the love she showed to both our Mom and Dad, along with the care she received from Makayla, Brandi, Patsy, Greg, Courtney and Jessica Mitchell and all of the medical team. They became family.
Burial will be private at a later date.
