Services for Helen Turner Smith have been changed to 11:30 am in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Saturday, April 16, 2011, due to expected inclement weather.The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. just prior to the services in the funeral chapel.Columbus, NC - Helen Turner Smith, 92, of 430 Skyuka Road, Columbus, NC died Monday, April 11, 2011 in St. Luke's Hospital in Columbus, NC. Born in Landrum, SC, Helen was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Alice Carruth Turner and was the widow of Sidney G. Smith who died in 1979. A graduate of Asheville Teachers College, she taught most of her thirty plus years in the Polk County Schools and was a member of the Polk County Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Tryon First Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Susan S. McHugh (Tom) of Saluda, NC and Joan S. Feagan (Phillip) of Columbus, NC; One brother, James Turner of Monroe, NC; two grandchildren, Alice Feagan of Eugene, OR and Phil Feagan of Chapel Hill, NC. Graveside service have been changed to 11:30 am in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Saturday, April 16, 2011, due to expected inclement weather.The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. just prior to the services in the funeral chapel.
