Obituary

Columbus, NC - Helen Louise Rhodes Gregory, 90, of Columbus, NC passed away March 4, 2014 at the Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, Landrum, SC.Born in Royal Pines, NC she was the daughter of the late Will and Minnie Rhodes. One of 11 children, she had seven brothers and three sisters. She was the widow of Victor Reed Gregory, who passed away in 2008. An accomplished singer, she sang with many music clubs and community choruses, often as a soloist. A member of Tryon United Methodist Church in her later life, she was active in many churches throughout the years, especially as a choir member. Mrs. Gregory attended Avery's Creek United Methodist Church; the First United Methodist Church of Alcoa, TN, where she taught Sunday school for many years; Pine Hill United Methodist Church in Orlando, FL; she was a charter member of Sanlando United Methodist Church in Longwood, FL; and Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Augusta, GA. Mrs. Gregory loved playing golf, bridge and spending time with her family, especially singing with her siblings.Survivors include two daughters, JoAnn Bailey (Bob) of Green Creek, NC and Jane Gregory (Emmett Fiero) of Longwood, FL; one son, Reed Gregory (Cynthia) of Round Lake Beach, IL; three grandsons, Brad Bailey (Ashley) of Marietta, GA, Matthew Bailey of Landrum, SC and Christian Gregory (Erica) of Round Lake Beach, IL; and one granddaughter, Hannah Martin (Casey) of Chicago, IL; as well as three great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Vernon Rhodes (Mary) of Lake Wylie, SC; sisters, Margaret Brown of Shelby, NC; Jean Carter of Tryon, NC; along with a brother-in-law, Bill Gregory (Pearl) of Knoxville, TN; sisters-in-law, Arbie Rhodes, Ruth Rhodes and Barbara Gunter as well as many loving nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2014 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel with Rev. Phillip Hurst officiating.Visitation will be held just prior to the service from 1:00 - 1:45 p.m. Friday March 7, 2014 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel.Burial will be held in Western North Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC at a later date.Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Dr. Charlotte, NC 28215 or to the Tryon United Methodist Building Fund, P.O. Box 897 Tryon, NC 28782.
