--Helen Marie Gast Cagney, born November 7, 1920, passed away on October 10 at age 98 in Columbus, NC. Helen lived a life filled with love of family and friends and travel. She was married to James E. Cagney, II, Esq. for 44 years. Jim preceded her in death in 1986. Helen's parents were Bert and Carolyn Gast of Chicago, who predeceased her, as did her brother Bert ("Bud"). She taught for 17 years at St. Anne School in Barrington, IL. Helen regaled all with her tales of her travels throughout the world including visiting India as a Fulbright Scholar. She was always active in activities related to her community and her church.Helen is survived by her children, Joseph Cagney (Barbara), Candida Cagney Sandford (Stephen), James E. Cagney III, Penelope Cagney (Nate Newman) and Kemper Cagney (Kathy), eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren who will miss her very much. Helen's sister Grace Gast Murray resides in Lake Forest, IL.The family will hold a private service.
