Columbus, N.C. - Hazel Ward Harris, 85, died Sunday, January 19, 2014 in the Medical Facility of Tryon, Estates, Columbus, NC.Born in Spindale, NC, she was the daughter of the late James M. and Cora Causby Ward. She was a stock broker for Thompson and McKinnon and later Johnston and Lane Securities retiring in l994. She moved to Polk County in l992 coming from Shelby, NC at the opening of Tryon Estates. Hazel was a volunteer with American Cancer Society holding every office during her 16 years of service. She was given the Citizen of the Year citation for that organization in l985. She loved gardening, cooking, sewing, and reading about stocks and companies and their strategies. Their rose garden at Tryon Estates was enjoyed by everyone. Hazel was a member of Tryon Presbyterian Church, Tryon, NC.Surviving are her husband of 37 years, Frederick "FTB" Harris of Tryon Estates; two grandchildren, Sabrina Southards of Ivanhoe, NC and Mark Susie (Fiona) of Morrisville, NC and 3 great-grandchildren; a step-daughter, Anita H. Taft (Donald) of Charlotte, NC; Stepson, C. T. Harris (Jane) of Charlotte, NC. Also surviving are 3 step-grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Mitchum Taylor and sister, Polly and brothers Donald, Homer, James, Hicks and Roger.Memorial services will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 22, 2014 in the auditorium of Tryon Estates with Rev. Rob Parsons officiating.Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC 28722.The family wishes to thank Carol Walker, her personal caregiver for her faithful and outstanding care for many years and also the staff at Tryon Estates all of whom were deeply loved by Hazel.
