- Harris Franklin Dake, 93, of Tryon, NC passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2017.Born in Ogdensburg, NY, he was the son of the late Ernest Bromling and Addie Elizabeth Edwards Dake. After high school, Harris enlisted in the United States Army, serving as Staff Sergeant in Patton's Third Army, and was a P.O.W. Upon retirement from service, he and his wife Patricia moved to Monroe, Connecticut, where he worked as a helicopter hydraulics engineer for Sikorsky Aircraft. After 27 years of service, he and his wife retired to Flat Rock, NC. Harris had a lifelong passion for poetry and published three books of his poetry. He also served as secretary and treasurer for the 565th AAA group for over 30 years. He was a member of the Congregational Church and served as a Deacon. During his retirement, he was an active member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hendersonville, NC.Harris was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-three years, Patricia Anne Lee Dake; a twin brother, Hollis G. Dake; two sisters, Wilma Dake and Maejel Kelty; and a grandson, Mark Pavlik.Surviving are a daughter, Holly Dake of Tryon, NC; three sons, David Dake of Tryon, NC, Kevin Dake, of Northfield, CT, and Paul Dake of Spring City, PA; a brother, Donald D. Dake (Cynthia); three sisters, Jean Miller, Joyce Tarshis, and Violet Fallone; eight grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1735 Fifth Avenue West, Hendersonville, NC with Pastor Richard Weidler officiating.A reception will follow the service.In lieu of flowers, please offer your time or donation to an organization of your choice that supports our veterans. -Harris F.
