Obituary

COLUMBUS, NC - Harold "Bud" Owen Shively, husband of Nan Collins Shively, died on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at Tryon Estates, Columbus, NC. Mr. Shively, a native of West Lafayette, IN and a 1943 graduate of Purdue University, retired to Tryon, NC in 1989 after 52 years in the media business. Almost immediately he became involved in volunteer leadership positions in community organizations including Habitat for Humanity, St. Luke's Hospital, American Heart Association, Tryon Rotary Club, Tryon Congregational Church, American Cancer Society, and Steps to Hope. In 1992, Mr. Shively was inducted into the Second Wind Hall of Fame. Mr. Shively began his career as a newspaper writer and editor, moved to trade magazines, and then to the management of television station (CBS affiliate WLFI in West Lafayette, IN 1970-1983; FOX affiliate WXMI in grand Rapids, MI 1983-1989). All who knew Bud were impressed by his ability "to get things done" and by his sunny, hospitable disposition. Two periods of service in the United States Air Force (1943-1946 and 1950-1952) interrupted his business career. Survivors in addition to his wife are one daughter, Peggy of Phoenix, AZ; two sons, John (Patricia) of Denver, CO and Tom (Brenda) of Oklahoma City, OK; stepchildren, Dr. Mark Hatcher of North Canton, OH and Elise Hatcher of Laguna Beach, CA. Also surviving are nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2008 in the Tryon Congregational Church, Tryon, NC.In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to honor Mr. Shively may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC 28722, Tryon Congregational Church, P.O. Box 1367, Tryon, NC 28782 or to Foothills Humane Society, P.O. Box 126, Tryon, NC 28782.
