Obituary

Tryon, NC- Gustav Ahrendt Hoffman, 94, of Vineyard Road, Tryon, NC, died October 16, 2008 in St. Luke's Hospital, Columbus, NC. Born in Newark, NJ, he was the son of Gustav and Anna Ahrendt Hoffman. He was a Lt. Commader for the Amphibious Forces in the Pacific during World War II. Mr. Hoffman attended Rutgers University and Harvard Business School. He was V.P. of Sales for Walworth Co. and Scovill Manufacturing Co. Mr. Hoffman was a member of the original steering committee of Super Saturday, president of Tryon Riding and Hunt Club, awarded Second Wind Hall of Fame in 1982, awarded the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. Hunt in 1992, and Equestrian of the year in 1995. He was V.P. of Tryon Fine Arts Center and Tryon Little Theatre and Founder and President of Foothills Equestrian Nature Center from 1986 until 1998. Mr. Hoffman was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross. He is survived by one son, Frederick G. Hoffman of Newton, MA and two grandsons, Christopher and Alexander. Mr. Hoffman was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Jeanne W. Hoffman who passed away in April, 2007. A private committal service will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross, Tryon, NC. A public memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials can be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC 28722.
