Obituary

- Mrs. Grace Gibbs Wilson, 107, of Mill Spring, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Autumn Care Nursing Home, in Saluda, North Carolina. A native of Polk County, she was the daughter of the late Ulysses S. Gibbs and Ella Lynch Gibbs, and the wife of the late Claude Carter Wilson who died in 1972. Grace was a member of Cooper's Gap Baptist Church. She was also a farmer's wife and an active gardener much of her life, where she enjoyed growing her plants and flowers. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting and spending time with her many family members and friends. Mrs. Wilson was an avid Duke Basketball fan and was Duke's Oldest fan. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Wilburn, Ted, Hugh and Horace Gibbs and two sisters, Lola Pace and Oma Williams. Grace was survived by three children, Clarence Wilson of Newton, NC, Clifford Wilson of Maiden, NC, and Ceila Arledge of Mill Spring, NC. She was predeceased by three sons, Carl Wilson, of Newton, NC, Cal Wilson of Norfolk, VA and Charles Wilson of Newton, NC. Grace is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was known to many as "Amazing Grace" and was presented with an historical award at her birthday party on, July 4th, 2008, as being the oldest person born in and living in Polk County. The family will receive friends at McFarland Funeral Chapel Thursday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, July 11, 2008 in the Cooper's Gap Baptist Church, Mill Spring, NC conducted by Reverend Warren Elliott. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. At other times, the family will be at the home of Ralph and Celia Arledge of Mill Spring. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of The Carolina Foothills, 130 Forest Glen Drive, Columbus, NC, 28722.
