Columbus, N.C. - Gladys Abernathy Lanning, 92, of Lanning Drive, Columbus, NC died Friday, March 13, 2015 at her home. Born in Spartanburg County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Marion and Mollie Roddy Abernathy and was the widow of Arthur Edwin "Ed" Lanning who died in 2010. Gladys was a homemaker and was well known for her beautiful quilts. She was a member of the Columbus First Baptist Church and had worked for numerous years in the Good Neighbor Store. Surviving are: her daughter, Rachel Lanning of the home; two sons, Arthur Lanning (Ginny) and Joe Lanning all of Columbus, NC; a sister, Corrine Cooley of Cherokee Springs, SC and two brothers, Roy Abernathy (Shirley) of Campobello, SC and Baylus Abernathy of Wellford, SC. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2015 in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, NC with Rev. Robert Capps officiating.
