G.L. Metcalf, 85, of the Fork Creek Community of Saluda went home to be with the Lord, Thursday afternoon, October 18, 2018 at Pardee Hospital.A native of Saluda, he was the son of the late Burton and Armintia Summey Metcalf. Mr. Metcalf was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the U.S. Army. After the war, he returned home and started working for General Electric in East Flat Rock and retired after 30 years of service. He was a lifelong member of Fork Creek Baptist Church and served as a Deacon for many years. During his life he enjoyed farming and spending time with his family.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, B.L. Metcalf; two sisters, Clestell Newell and Claire Metcalf.Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Mildred Pace Metcalf; one son, Richard Metcalf (Lynn) of Flat Rock; two daughters, Cindy Nagy (Dave) of Mocksville and Lisa Ward (Brian) of Campobello; one brother, C.L. Metcalf (Doris) of Zirconia; two sisters, Janice Morrison of Hendersonville and Judith Metcalf of Saluda; ten grandchildren, Aaron Hursey, Phillip Hursey, Matthew Hursey, David Hursey, Kevin Metcalf, Drew Metcalf, Haley Elliott, Jacob Elliott, Brandon Ward and Brianna Stepp. Also surviving are 7 great-grandchildren.A funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, October 21, 2018 in Fork Creek Baptist Church with Rev. James B. Parker officiating.Burial will follow in Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Polk County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.The family will receive friends prior to the service Sunday from.2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. at the church.At other times, the family will be at the home.
