Columbus, NC -- George Gillon Rogers, 97, of Laurel Lake Dr., Tryon Estates, Columbus, NC, died Friday, July 21, 2006 in Tryon Estates Medical Facility in Columbus, NC. Born in New York City, NY, he was the son of the late George A. and Catherine Mooney Rogers. He grew up in Summit, NJ, where he graduated from high school. He attended the Newark College of Engineering. In June of 1936, he married Dorothy Ford of Chatham, NJ. They resided in Chatham throughout his forty-one year career with the NJ Bell Telephone Company from which he retired in 1971. Following his retirement, he and his wife moved to Heritage Circle in Southbury, CT, where he served several years as the president of the community association. In 1992 they moved to Tryon Estates, Columbus, NC. His wife Dorothy May Rogers preceded him in death in 2001 and also his two sisters. He enjoyed gardening, opera, deep-sea fishing and traveling. Known for his bright blue eyes and sunny smile, he was loved and respected by friends and family. Surviving are four daughters, Roberta May and husband, Russell of Hilton Head, SC, Janet Rogers of Millville, NJ, Susan Ford and husband, Emory of Florence, MA, and Linda Tucker of N. Stonington, CT. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren who knew him as "Papa George". A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2006 in Tryon Estates Auditorium in Columbus, NC. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice or the First Exeter Unitarian Church, 10 Elm St., Exeter, NH 03833, where his granddaughter, Kendra Ford serves as minister.
