COLUMBUS, NC -- Frederick Nelson Minard, 86, of Laurel Lake Dr., Tryon Estates, Columbus, NC, died Monday, July 14, 2008 in Tryon Estates Medical Facility.Fred was born in Davenport, Iowa to Clarence Minard and Carrie Nelson Minard. He received a B.S. degree in chemistry from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa in December 1943. He received his Ph.D degree from Iowa State University in June, 1949. He was on Upjohn Company fellowship throughout his graduate work.Fred was a scientist in the Department of General Pharmacology at Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago, IL. He was a member of the honor societies Sigma Xi and Phi Lambda Upsilon and the professional societies International Society of Biochemistry and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He also was the author of many articles for scientific journals. He married Kathleen Kildee of Ames, Iowa in 1944. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Sarah Gordy and her husband Tom of Burnet, TX, and by his son, John and his wife, Maureen and their children, Liz, Laura and Charlie of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.Memorial services will be held at a later date.Memorials may be made to The Lanier Library, 72 Chestnut Street, Tryon, NC 28782.
